The Internet Society in Bosnia and Herzegovina presented a paper entitled “ICT accessibility for people with disabilities” at the International Convention for Information, Communication and Electronic Technology, MIPRO 2022, which was held in Opatija, Croatia, from 23. 05. – 27. 05. 2022
The paper was prepared and presented as an output from the project funded by the Internet Society Foundation in frame of the 2022 Small Grants- Beyond the Net Program.
The aim of this paper is to raise awareness of the importance of ICT accessibility for people with disabilities, which is in line with Article 9) of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which underlines the need to take appropriate measures to promote accessibility of new information and communication technology and systems, including the Internet.
After a brief introduction to key documents such as the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Directive (EU) 2016/2102 on Web Accessibility and Directive (EU) 2019/882 on accessibility requirements for products and services, as well as EN 301 549 standard, a review of the principles of universal design and examples of assistive technology is given.
The mission of the Internet Society “The Internet is for Everyone” was presented, as well as the activities of the Internet Society in Bosnia and Herzegovina to empower blind people through computer training to provide access to the Internet that provides unlimited opportunities.
Respecting the slogan “Nothing About Us Without Us”, whose message is that it is necessary to include people with disabilities in decisions and activities related to improving their quality of life, computer training for blind people is conducted by a lecturer who is blind person.
